In the spring of 1945, Germany was cornered on all fronts. As the Western Allies advanced, the Red Army encircled Berlin. After fierce fighting, the capital fell in early May. The surrender was officially signed on May 7 and 8, bringing the war in Europe to an end. A provisional government briefly tried to continue the Reich from Flensburg, but the Allies dissolved it on May 23. The Nazi regime then came to a complete end.
